lyrics

There's golden fields I'll never know
Where angles sing and warm winds blow
There's fire brewing down below
This I know
Because I shot a man and I left him to die
In the cold lonely streets of Olde El Paso last night
The moon was high and though no words were spoken
I knew in my heart that my path had been chosen
I turned away and as I looked to the sky
My horse rode past those last fading rays of light
I heard somebody say that you can't keep a dead man alive

Well I had to sell my horse cuz I could ride it no further
Plus I needed the cash so I could start all over
So I hopped on a frieght train said it was headed for Housten
I only prayed that I could make it there alive

When they caught up with me it was quarter to nine
Five miles out of Housten I had nowhere to hide
Because they had me surrounded and outguned ten to one
I couldn't fight them and I had nowhere to run

I didn't want to die out here in the desert
Hung from a rope or pumped full of lead
But you can't run forever and I've got noplace to hide
